Key structural observations
- Two commands to read are connected to the Lord who creates and teaches. Repetitions of khalaqa and ʿallama recall received origin and knowledge (1–5).
- Three uses of al-insān connect creation, learning and transgression. Imagined sufficiency is followed by the reminder of return to the Lord (2, 5–8).
- The scene of the servant prevented from praying unfolds through three occurrences of araʾayta. Self-regard is confronted with guidance, denial and Allah’s sight (7, 9–14).
- The one who forbids must desist; the repeated forelock bears descriptions of lying and sin. Two calls contrast the human assembly with divine action (9, 15–18).
- Three occurrences of kallā mark transgression, threat and refusal to obey the opponent. Commands to prostrate and draw near complete the movement opened by reading (1, 3, 6, 15, 19).
