Key structural observations
- The surah is structured in successive waves: the reminders do not mechanically close the heart, they progressively establish the proof and reduce the objective space of excuse.
- Its repeated refrain, waylun yawmaʾidhin lil-mukadhdhibīn, functions structurally as a seal placed after each wave; the image of a window closing belongs to tadabbur on the exhaustion of excuse, not to a closure Allah would perform at every return.
- The surah culminates in a moment of the Day of Separation where the deniers have neither useful speech nor permitted repentance. This silence is first of all an eschatological judgement: it corresponds to a long course of refusal, without being presented as a psychological muteness that this refusal would mechanically produce.
- This moment is not a general silence: discourse continues around them, since they hear the command, the judgement and the challenge. What is withdrawn from them is the possibility of reopening the situation through fresh argument.
