Key structural observations
- Three verses carry three moments: the oath by al-ʿaṣr, the general assertion of loss, then an exception described through four connected qualities (1–3).
- Inna and the lām strengthen the answer to the oath. Fī presents loss as a condition surrounding the human being; illā then opens the response to that condition (2–3).
- Al-insān, a singular with general scope, becomes plural alladhīna. Four verbs share the same subject and three occurrences of wāw connect faith, good deeds and two acts of mutual counsel (2–3).
- Tawāṣaw occurs twice with the same construction: bi-l-ḥaqq, then bi-ṣ-ṣabr. Reciprocity concerns truth and patience alike, attention to direction and support for constancy (3).
- The brevity of the oath and assertion leads to the long verse of the exception. Passing time thus receives an answer of faith, action and shared faithfulness (1–3).
